What is a headlight restoration?

There are many forms of attempts at restoring a headlight. Some people try to use sanding, polishing, toothpaste, WD-40, lime and baking soda. None of these alone should ever qualify as headlight restoration. The proper headlight restoration contains three steps. Step one is to sand off the old damages coating from factory. Second is to polish the headlight with an oil based headlight specific polish. Final step would be to coat the headlight in a headlight designed UV coating for long lasting protection.

Why should you get a headlight restoration?

You should get a headlight restoration if you care about your safety, the brand new look is the cherry on top. Did you know that a yellow cloudy headlight only projects 20% of the original light that it did when it was new. Losing yards of vision when driving, especially at high speed can be fatal to you and others on the road. The number one reason to get a headlight restoration is for safety reasons. The bonus is they get too look good as well.

When should you get a headlight restoration?

Don't wait until your headlights become yellow. The headlight coating actually starts to fail when it becomes hazy and starts crumbling from the top. If you wait until the yellowing sets or the whole headlight becomes cloudy then you are too late. The polycarbonate can form spider cracking or moisture can get inside the headlight housing.  So don't wait to get your headlights restored.

How do headlights go bad?

Headlights go bad for various reasons but there are three main culprits.

1. Car Washes: a car wash can have the worlds most gentle sponge or automatic washing brushes. It will still contain dirt from the car that was washed before yours. It will end up slowly eating away at your headlight coating over time.
2. Driving Fast: this is unavoidable but driving over 40 - 60 mph results in dust, dirt, and rocks to chip away the headlight coating. This acts kind of like a slow sanding process.
3. The Sun: UV rays beat down on your headlight all day. Over time the UV protection in your headlight coating runs out. Then the headlight and coating starts heating up more often. This dries it out while making it expand through heat cycles. As a result your coating starts crumbling.

Number one reason to get a headlight restoration is safety. When your headlight coating fails and the cloudy haze sets in you lose brightness coming out of it. You can lose up to 80% of the original light that used to come out of your headlight. This will reduce yards of vision while driving at night. This is extremely unsafe especially when driving at higher speeds. Headlight restoration helps bring back the lost brightness to help you see better at night.

Saves Money

New authentic headlights from the original car manufacturer are expensive. Usually costing between hundreds to thousands of dollars before labor. Cheap aftermarket headlights on third party websites will only last as long if not less than a headlight restoration. But unlike a restoration you will still need someone to install them. When you can pay for a headlight restoration instead that will restore the brand new look without having to replace them.
