Ceramic coating is a thin layer of silicon dioxide applied over your car's clear coat. It is one of the few types of automotive body protection. It will provide protection against UV rays, industrial fallout, tree sap, bird droppings, and bug guts. But it will not protect against rock chips or scratches. It will last years instead of months of protection that comes with a typical wax or spray on protection. Best of all it makes maintaining and washing your car much easier.
There are two main and common reasons people get their car ceramic coated. One you want to preserve the new look of your vehicle. Two you want to make it easy to wash your car. The UV protection it provides against elements helps prevent corrosion and oxidation of paint. The hydrophobic aspect stops bird droppings, bug guts, and industrial fallout from sticking to your paint. Making it easy to wash off especially when water loves to bead up and glide off your car.
The perfect time to get a ceramic coating would be when the car is brand new. But this is not the only time you should. Based on your goal there are other use cases where a ceramic coating is appropriate. If you are happy with your car's paint condition as it is, you can get a ceramic coating right after a paint decon. This will save you money but will ensure the coating bonds providing protection. After a paint correction is another perfect time to get a ceramic coating. Because paint correction removes most imperfections and will leave a clean surface for the coating to bond.
When applying a ceramic coating there are two important steps. Step one is to prep the surface for application. This includes a deep exterior wash followed by paint decontamination. We want to make sure we remove anything that is not part of your clear coat. At this point the surface is ready to receive ceramic coating if you are happy with the condition of your paint. If not, you will need paint correction to remove the imperfections. Step two is to apply the ceramic coating. Make sure to wear protection while doing this step. Each different brand of ceramic coatings have their own unique instructions for application. But generally you want to prime your applicator with 10 to 12 drops at first. Put the applicator on the surface and box off an area you will coat. Coat inside the area using your preferred pattern of hand motion. You will see some streaking and this is normal. Some coatings flash, some sweat, and some a rainbowing effect that decreases afterwards. This can take anywhere between 1 to 5 minutes depending on the temperature and humidity. It is a sign that the coating is ready to for leveling to smooth it out. Use a short nap towel to level the coating and finish with a final buff using a long nap towel.
UV can over time damage and oxidize your paint. Your clear coat will in time end up chipping away. The lucky few that don't get a hazy or faded look which can diminish the rich color of your vehicle. Ceramic coating provides UV protection to prevent this from happening.
Besides the UV protection ceramic coating has another characteristic. Hydrophobics nature of the silicon dioxide coating makes it very hard to stick to it. This stops bird droppings, tree sap, bug guts and water spots from sticking to your paint. Preserving the quality and health of your paint.
While it does not protect against scratches or rock chips, a ceramic coating does preserve the all around health of car paint. Stopping you from having to pay for an expensive paint job later down the line. Because a ceramic coating that stops your paint from fading is much cheaper than repainting your car.
Everything mentioned so far will contribute to preserving the resale value. If you decide to sell your car in the future it will have a newer, cleaner, and better looking paint that pops. Many people care about these things when buying a vehicle, as a result it would boost the car's resale value. It is what the buyer wants and demands.
